Though the car takes design cues from previous Fallout vehicles, most notably the front and sides, the real life inspiration for the rear end is definitely the 1951 Buick XP-300, as suggested by kalu.

Top hood and upper fenders is practically flat, while the D-Type has a lot of curves. Closest I found was the Ferrari 375 Plus: assets.blog.hemmings.com/wp-content/uploads//2014/03/Ferrari375Plus_1250.jpg Other variants of the 375 aren't as close as that.

Seems pretty clear what the in-game name is based on that. Chryslus Rocket 69 should be its name in Forza, and it does sound more like a real car than Cherry Bomb. It's also very unlikely to break the sound barrier in Forza. While it mostly looks the same, they're different cars in different games. I also doubt the Forza one uses a joystick for controls instead of a steering wheel and pedals.
