As I see on the game there are Standards, better-quality standards and premiums

I read somewhere that standard cars has as many polygons as Forza's cars.

Well, that depends on the LOD of the car.

Depending on the LOD, you get more or less polygons, on Forza 3, the lowest LOD (Supposed to be used for AI cars which are so far away) is about 2556 polys, but the highest one (used in car selection and photo mode) is about 172753 polys. The LOD used in actual play have "only" 45074 polys.

A premium car on GT5, can have more polys than the biggest LOD in Forza (that wouldn´t be a surprise) but it´s impossible a simple standard car could have more, at least, talking about the highest LOD.

And on a side note, GT5 also have different LOD types, in actual gameplay, the polygon ammount also drops significantly. (Well, all games do this, in the interior view, the high detail LOD remains since you are only seeing the dash and a few more details, but in the exterior view, you really don´t need a perfect mesh, since you are not going to notice the details as you drive along)

yeh the car models probly just consist of a highly detaild shell with wheels, +or- a basic interior, so there pretty much limited to this type of damage and texture damage (like NFS Carbon)
the parts will probly not break off, besides, maybe window and stuff, So i guess the damage is going to be comparable to Midnight Club 3

Well, with all 4 new wheels (I guess those are pretty detailed since they had to model them from scratch) they should be in the region of Forza1-polycounts.

Which doesnt mean much since the carbody itself still is only a playstation2 model, maybe with some added polygons to the headlights.

Polyphony Digital have 110 employees, while Turn10 have more than 200. I agree on every single line you said, Polyphony should use more people or use external studios to make the cars...

Maybe in that way GT5 would really have 1000 cars, not 200 with the GT4 and GT PSP cars as used cars. (That´s stupid as well, only 1 Bugatti, and it´s standard, since it´s from GT PSP...)

Yeah, the new pics of some standart cars confirmed it, those are just GT4 (playstation2!) lowpolymodels with new 3D wheel models and higher res textures (they most probably had them still saved). Thats kinda unbelievable for a game which took like 5 years to create. Im not sure how many people are working in their art department as vehicle modelers but you should expect more from them. It takes like one working day max. per car to model those new rims and apply some new textures and materials. That means if 10 people were working on converting the models and textures of all 700 cars GT4 cars to GT5 standart vehicles it would take polyphony digital like 2 or 3 months which means they got 4 years to model the premium ones. Looking at Forza3 which has like 500 premium models made in half the time its not an impossible thing. Althought Turn10 outsourced pretty much every vehicle to different studios with hundrets of employees. Maybe PD should think about outsourcing as well (or just hire more vehicle artist which Im 10000% for!!)

It's because they are essentially upscaled GT4 models. This means that only about 20% of the cars will be new and premium.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. I thought all standart cars have atleast the same highpoly exterior meshes like all premium cars, just no interior, tuning, openable doors and so on. But looking at that picture above its clearly visible those body-lines are just textures which means standart cars are much less detailed than premium cars on the outside as well. Id like to know how much less.

Well.....I still think its going to be a good game, but this is just a small preview (that oddly enough looks similar to GTA IV's damage model), wait till the final product, I'm pretty sure thats just "minor" damage. (I pray)

The problem was trying to make standard models get damaged...even another reason to say they should cut them.

It looks like someone used the warp tool in Photoshop on the texture.
