IMCDb is as likely to be correct as IGCD is...

According to wikipedia, the car was originally unveiled in the UK under the Ford name. It was built upon the Mondeo chassis to bring a Capri-like car back to the brand and as a larger alternative to the Puma. The Ford model also outlived the Mercury model by two years, continuing to be sold in Australia until 2004.

I'm with Rinspeed on this.

IMCDb has the Ford Cougar listed as US origin, not German origin.

Interesting. I'm hoping that some of the newer Monegasque models get to appear in new GT or Forza games.

Not false... the car originated as the European Ford model, which was then built and sold in the US under Mercury. We do the same thing with Vauxhall/Opel models, even though the Astra is assembled in the UK.

Totally false. Venturi is a french maker at the origin 1980's/1990's. Since the 2000's, it was acquired by Gildo Pastore a Monaco bussinessman and since that, Venturi is from Monaco.

I think EA still had the rights to M cars (like the M3, M5 etc.) at the time, so Polyphony just added each car with different engines. I thought it was still quite cool though, especially the 328Ci. I wish they'd kept that in GT4.
