Burnout Revenge (2005)Star Wars Fanatic EN (487)Burnout Revenge arrived hot on the heels of the previously ground breaking Burnout 3 Takedown, and is considered by some to be the most accomplished title out of the Burnout franchise thus far. I, however, disagree. Whilst the frantic gameplay, a crucial staple to Burnouts success, still excels, there were a few new features that I simply felt were unsuitable. The defining new feature of Burnout Revenge is an emphasis on revenge, a step up from takedowns, whereby you get credited more explicitly for taking another racer out who previously took you out. However, in reality the most noticable new aspect of Burnout Revenge is the inclusion of the dubious traffic checking mode. This mechanic enabled you to plough into the traffic relentlessly, and essentially use it as a weapon as crashing into traffic was no longer an issue. Although it can look spectacular, seeing the seemingly weightless cars float around out of your way was just too ludicrous, even by Burnouts monstrous standards, and more importantly took away the challenging nature of hurtling through traffic at high speed that the series once possessed. It just didn't feel dangerous anymore, unless you went the wrong way since traffic checking didn't apply to oncoming traffic. As with Burnout 3, the series was once again horrifically EAified with an even worse soundtrack and an even worse crash mode. For some reason, they felt the need to make crash mode play like a game of golf, by introducing a contrived starting meter, along with wind hazards and even cringe worthy cheering just to remind you that you have bought a product of EA. As for the car lineup, I can't help but feel that a better variety of cars would have been of benefit since Revenge mostly relies on sports cars in comparison to Takedowns array variety. Even compacts and saloons are merely restricted to crash mode. Incredibly, it was also impossible to jump into a single race - you had to trawl through the world tour mode rather than swiftly jump into a race of your desire. Still, despite the negatives the graphics were an improvement with their more realistic flair, and you can hardly call a Burnout game unenjoyable. An enhanced version was also released on the Xbox 360. 2007-09-12 23:24

MotorStorm (2006)Star Wars Fanatic EN (487)This week saw the arrival of Motorstorm's first purchasable add on pack, Coyote Revenge. The pack adds a brand new weekend festival comprising of 3 new tickets with 9 races in total, but more notably features a new track, which is essentially a reverse version of the existing Coyote Rage track, but redone to incorporate new routes. Three new vehicles were also included, consisting of a new bike, an ATV that looks like a shopping trolley and a bonus unlockable buggy, which is useless. Annoyingly, the American version of Coyote Revenge featured 2 extra vehicles, namely an A-team style van and Mad Max style bus, although we should be getting them next week in an additional vehicle pack. Finally, an eliminator online mode was also added which is quite good fun. 2007-09-08 15:06

John Woo Presents Stranglehold
Star Wars Fanatic EN (487)Stranglehold is the latest next generation third person shooter, developed in collaboration with John Woo in an intriguing premise as an apparent sequel to the film Hard Boiled, even featuring Chow Yun Fat as the main character. As far as the over the top action movie vibe goes, Stranglehold nails it perfectly, particularly with its graciously impressive environment destruction, whereby literally any object can be decimated convincingly. Despite its presentation however, in gaming terms it comes across to me more as a cross between Max Payne and True Crime, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. 2007-09-08 14:21
