Chase H.Q. II: Special Criminal Investigation (1989)Star Wars Fanatic EN (487)Special Criminal Investigation was the official arcade sequel to the ground breaking Chase HQ, and was released a year later. Whilst it retains its predecessors premise (a series of levels involving you taking control of your units police car in order to stop fleeing criminals) and graphics engine, its gameplay was improved with the addition of the ability for your partner to fire weapons at the target vehicles, which made the experience a little less frustrating. It also bases itself on a single individual case with inter linked scenes, unlike the original which dealt with multiple cases in each level. Other than that, it plays almost identically to Chase HQ, with the other notable difference being the switch of the protagonist's car, from the black Porsche 928 to a then new red Nissan 300 ZX. Whilst I personally prefer the car lineup in the original, Special Criminal Investigation was still an enjoyable title. A final arcade sequel, Super Chase Criminal Termination, was released in 1993, completing the trilogy.

Burnout Paradise (2008)
Burnout Paradise Remastered
Star Wars Fanatic EN (487)I have played it a fair bit now and, predictably, I am in love with it. The biggest diversion is of course the new free roaming aspect of Burnout, but I don't think it works quite as well as Criterion themselves believe. The simple problem is that there is no option to retry an event and it is very easy to become lost thanks to the games poor excuse of a guide map. Events are also dotted around the map at every junction, meaning you cannot simply jump to any event you want with ease, which somewhat detracts from Burnouts previous arcade pick up and play experience. My other main gripe is the inclusion of showtime, the new replacement of the previously favoured crash mode. Instead of playing like an elaborate puzzle, showtime lets you initiate your car, at any given time, into a high speed rollover, giving you the ability to actively bounce your car across the road for as long as you can keep up your boost by hitting cars. As fun as it can be causing the biggest accident possible, it is not a worthy substitute to the original crash mode in my opinion despite sticking to Burnouts unparalleled lunacy, particularly as there is virtually no strategy involved anymore. The bouncing mechanic can also look ridiculous, looking like something out of Katamari.

Despite these few shortcomings, Burnout Paradise is an absolute joy to play. Hours of enjoyment can be had by simply cruising the streets, thanks in part to the games new handling model - the cars finally feel more like cars with the added suspension and handbrake function which works brilliantly. Paradise City itself is also incredibly well realised, with some deliciously slick visuals highlighting the citys polish spectacularly. I have to say, it is also possibly the most well designed fictional city I have seen in a game thus far - there is never a dull moment with the myriad of jump opportunities and other assortments of city furniture to plough into.

And then we have the undisputed highlight of the game - the crashes. Destruction has always been a hallmark of the series, but it has never been as eerily realistic as what is presented here. This is the first game to use full chassis damage, resulting in the car decimating as realistically as possible, making it even possible to wrap around objects that you hit convincingly. It really is strikingly realistic, to the point you can see the energy being transfered each impact. It puts all other previous damage models to shame.

Online multiplayer also plays a significant part, and, like the rest of the game, is completely seamless and can be accessed by a simple drop down model. From here, you are able to free roam with other players or take up specifically placed online challenges, although it is not too disimilar to Test Drive Unlimited, in some ways. I also can't help admire some of the games novel touches, particularly the passing refernces to the original Burnout titles. The complete soundtrack from Burnout and Burnout 2 has been reprised which injects a hint of nostalgia. Interestingly however, the in house soundtrack that was originally compiled for Burnout 3 before it was EA-ified is also in place.

Whilst I haven't exactly completed the game, impressions look strong, but it is not quite the perfect Burnout due to a few of its shortcomings. If anyone has any questions then fire away :D
