Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999)Star Wars Fanatic EN (494)Playing GTA 2 retrospectively would certainly have hampered the experience, G-MANN. I remember loving GTA 2 in my underage excitement after playing both GTA and London to death, although GTA 3 will still be the most impacting of the series for me. 2007-08-14 22:12
Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999)badlymad CA (5)GTA2 was a fun game for its time, and fooling around with the cheat codes and the minigames made for some interesting games. I first played GTA2 after GTA1, so it definitely felt like an improvement with the gang system and health meter, among other things. Though the vehicles were not very attractive both in looks and handling, I got around that by using StyED to not just change the characteristics of the cars, but also replace them with converted GTA1 cars. By the time I got tired with the game, I had replaced practically every car with the exception of the hot dog van and the tank. 2007-08-14 21:23

Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999)G-MANN UK (51)GTA2 definetely had more advanced graphics than GTA1 (and especially GTA: London) however I never liked the handling of the cars, it took too long to stop them and reverse them and go from reserve to foward motion, that kind of spoiled it for me. I first played GTA2 in 1999 at a friend's house but by the time I bought it for myself (for £2 in a second-hand game shop) at the end of 2003, I'd already completed GTA3 and GTA: Vice City so it felt pretty dated, it was more impressive when I first saw it. The later games also incorporated features that GTA2 introduced, like the advanced wanted level, so that was no longer a novelty. I still used to enjoy playing GTA1 occaisionally, even after experiencing the post-GTA3 games, but I could never really be bothered with GTA2, I've only ever played it a few times.

Destruction Derby Arenas (2004)Star Wars Fanatic EN (494)The Destruction Derby format climaxed on the PS2, and was beginning to show its age after it first debuted back in 1995. To counter this, Studio 33 attempted to freshen things up a bit by introducing a new more slapstick, cartoony vibe with colourful visuals, stereotypically crafted individual drivers and power ups. As a result, the depicted cars looked like that of toy cars, and the destruction felt toned down, particularly with the damage model which was somewhat basic. The racing action also felt much more slow although it actually made the game feet more refined. However, where Destruction Derby Arenas comes more into its own can be found within the track design, which is simply fantastic, particularly the arenas themselves which sometimes featured hazardous disappearing areas. Despite the gloss, the game still felt like familiar territory of smashing cars into submission - and there is noting wrong with that for car crash addicts like myself.

Destruction Derby Arenas is also notable for being one of the first online PS2 games, and was a joy to play with support for up to an impressive 20 players.

Need for Speed II (1997)G-MANN UK (51)Released in 1997, Need For Speed II allows the players to drive 9 of the most exotic supercars in the world at that time, including the then-fastest production car ever made, the McLaren F1, the not-for-sale concept cars the Ford GT90, Ford Indigo (the bonus car that had to be unlocked) and the Italdesign Cala, the racing version of the Lotus Elise, the GT1, and the one-off hand-built Isdera Commendatori 112i, the prototype for a never-realised production run of exclusive 212mph supercars that were to be sold for $450,000 each. The other vehicles listed on this page make up the road traffic that can be turned on and off at each track (except Proving Grounds, there is no traffic there), to drive these vehicles you must enter cheat codes. The player had the choice of racing around 6 different tracks set in picturesque locations around the world; Proving Grounds (a test track in Norway), Outback (Australia), North Country (a mix of Germany and the Netherlands), Pacific Spirit (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), Mediterraneo (Greece), Mystic Peaks (Nepal) and a bonus track Monolithic Studios (a fictional Hollywood film studio lot with gigantic drive-through sets), which could be unlocked by winning the Knockout Competition.

There is also a Special Edition of Need For Speed II, which adds 4 new cars (Italdesign Nazca, Ferrari 355 F1, Ford Mustang Mach III, Pontiac GTO), and 3 unlockable bonus cars (a NASCAR, a concept Indycar and a custom racer) and an new track (a South American jungle). However I do not have this version of the game.
