Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)taxiguyWell actually, the huge pile-ups may have been fun, but the fact that they are not there in the new game is really an improvement :D It shows that they have made the game more realistic and given it a primitive sort of artificial intelligence. In GTA:SA, if a car stops on the freeway, all the cars behind it just keep going at full speed, they don't even try to slow down at all and end up hitting one another causing the pile ups and explosions. Think about it, is that what really happens in real life? No way! The driver would see the stopped car in front and slow down (it might still rear end the other car or bump it, but certainly wouldn't cause a pile up) And this is exactly what they have done in the new game, so if you think about it, it is actually more like real life than it was before in that aspect. 2008-09-18 01:02
Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)carchasesfanaticI think the same as you J-2, i imss all that stuff as well, by big terrain you mean long landscapes dont you? i misss that too, long freeways to drive along etc but i guess that's the "disadvantage" of being set in an only city, i also miss the huge pile ups that used to take place, they are smaller now and cars dont hit between each other that hard, but appart from those things i think the game is quite nicely done, the damage engine is simply superb as well as the atmosphere, the recreation of the city in general and the cars, let us hope they "fix" those small details for the next one :) 2008-09-17 19:26

My only complain about this game is about the features missing from SA (Diving, casinos, trailers on trucks, random license plate system, some guns like the flamethrower, golf caddy, minigun, silenced pistol, etc..., a big terrain, some vehicles, etc...) 2008-09-17 17:40

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)Star Wars Fanatic EN (487)To summarise what taxiguy said, it is the attention to detail that has always made GTA a series that shines above all others :) Everyone is entitled to their opinion though, and some of the points raised by TA-caprice are still valid. I will admit that the more realistic direction this game has taken has its advantages and disadvantages, but I do agree that there is very little you can actually do with all the money you have been earning all the way through, which almost makes completing the game something of an anti climax - you can't even buy properties like before. How realistic is that? :p

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)taxiguyHow can you say the game is lacking at all?? It is a vast improvement over all the GTA games in pretty much every way. It is so good and realistic I'd hesitate to even call it a "game" at all, more like a second life. The thing I like about it though, is the extremely accurate NYC rendering. Sure it's not a GPS accurate street grid like in True Crime: New York City, far from it actually (the Empire State Building is practically right next to the WTC site :p ) But unlike in True Crime New York City, there are dozens of accurate buildings and landmarks and in their approximately accurate locations. This is especially true in the Times Square area, where almost every building is recreated accurately and in it's accurate spot, such as One Times Square, the Paramount Building, the Conde Nast Building, Bertelsmann Building, Two Times Square, One Astor Plaza, and 1585 Broadway to list a few (yes I have memorized all the buildings in Times Square, I'm quite a nerd like that :p ) I know most people don't care about this but it's really important to me in creating the true "New York" feeling, it's almost like a virtual reality of being in the city when playing the game. Of course it wouldn't be a good game without the cars either, and this game has wonderful cars. The thing I like about them is that most of them are clearly and accurately based on real-life cars, my two favorites being the Crown Victoria and Impala taxi and police cars (they even have the car I own in the game a, 1987 Honda Accord  ) Plus, the cars are detailed like nothing I've ever seen in a game before, it simply amazes me. They went to so much trouble to make the cars real-life accurate, right down to the specially grey-colored bumpers on the late 90s Crown Vic taxicabs. They even have some in the game that have yellow bumpers, and some black ones too, making it even more accurtate to what you would see if you actually went to New York in real life. I know this is another thing no one but me cares about, but it just goes to show how much trouble, time and effort they put in to making this game. 11 out of 10 rating from me! :king: 2008-09-17 01:13

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)TA-caprice-XI SX (8)Am I the only one who thinks that GTA IV doesn't deserve the overly posotive reviews it's getting? I mean it's a decent game but the only improvement over previous GTA games is the graphics, physics, damage engine etc - the core game has virtually nothing new (except the more expanded use of the mobile phone and - annoyingly - the more expanded friend/girlfriends). Once I'd completed the story missions I found myself completely bored - pretty much all the side missions have been removed (except for the police missions which were a welcome improvement). Although there are several side missions to complete, the only reward is more money which can't be spent as there is nothing expensive to buy (cars, safehouses etc). Seriously, if anyone decides to waste time killing all 200 pigeons you'll be immensley dissappointed with the 'reward'.

This never really felt like a GTA game to me, as the game seems more geared towards realism and hanging out with virtual friends/going on virtual dates, as opposed to driving around in monster trucks or tanks (who wouldn't want to crush cars with this new damage engine?) causing mayhem while getting chased by the FBI, or just driving around looking for hidden vehicles (sadly, there is only one in this game). Needless to say, I owned this game for a grand total of 2 months before i traded it in - which was kind of sad really, as every other GTA game has kept me entertained for at least a year after their respective release date. What's even worse is that the game was willingly released unfinished - regarding the DLC, so, in other words you paid the full price for the incomplete game then you have to pay even more to add things to the game that could have been there in the first place, looks like Rockstar are getting a touch of EA syndrome.

Sorry for such a long comment, but I just thought I'd share my opinion. To me, this game only deserves a 6 or 7 out of 10 - good game, but definately lacking. Hopefully Saints Row 2 and Mafia 2 can provide more enjoyment.
