But these new devs weren't the creators of the original game the models are from?

The new dev team consists of both old and new devs

The old devs created most of them, but some vehicle models were revised. I think the new ship models were bought from an online store.

Wait, they didn't create the assets?

The game has been early access since 2003, but I went with the 2016 Delta release when it changed developer and got a major overhaul.
It is a free to play game made by a small indie team, runs on an old game engine, and still uses lots of outdated assets.

This came out in 2016? then why does it look like a game made in 2006?

The game has been early access since 2003. In 2016, it received an official release under a new development team.
