Another trailer, but this time with actual gameplay footage:

I actually like this new ridge racer. The only one I have played is the first one on the PS1 and I thought is was really bad so did not play it. I always liked driving very fast cars into things so I will deffinatly like this, and its on xbox to, so I can play it!

No wonder that now Ridge Racer Unbounded become the burnout wannabe because the devoloper is a Flatout creator. But actually I wish that would happen to this game. The previous are too bad.

Don't know whether it'll be a failure or not, but it has it own 'city editor'.

Gonna be a blast though. Although now it's more like Split/Second + Burnout hybrid than Burnout/Flatout itself (i.r from the very first impression).

Quote Available at the regular retail price.

Ridge Racer Unbounded will be available on March 30 in a Day One Edition, including three extra racing machines and five Namco paint jobs.

The Ghoster: A low rider coupe with an electric blue finish
The Immortal: This red super sports beast isn't easy to tame, but it's worth the effort
The Road Wolf: Eat up the competition with this classic red coupe inspired by cars of the 60's

The five paint jobs, one each for five of the existing cars, are fully pimped in the style of PAC-MAN (Kinghawk GT), GALAGA (Hurricana CX), TEKKEN (Crimson TT), SOULCALIBUR (Wolfseye GT) and ACE COMBAT (Sylvian Type 8).

Namco Bandai also revealed the Ridge Racer Unbounded pre-order program with GAME.

RIDGE RACER 1 Car: The machine from the very first RIDGE RACER that began the legacy. (Fiera, confirmed)
The Hearse: A dark and gloomy hearse – with this machine no other car will end the race alive.
RIDGE RACER Type 4 Car: The hero car from RIDGE RACER Type 4, this is a fan favourite from the landmark of arcade racing. (R4 Bisonte? Can't remember)
El Mariachi: A flashy orange coupe utility with a crazy engine. If you're feeling a little bit country, get behind the wheel of this! (El Camino?)
RIDGE RACER 7 Car: The hero car from RIDGE RACER 7, this extreme sports car has a whole lot of power. (obviously RC410)
The Gallows: A classic yellow hot rod pick up that stands out a mile in the heat of the race (resembles the Crusader from Flatout 2)

That track editor is one of the best I've ever seen, the freedom you appear to have is genuinely surprising. I can see myself spending as much time using that as playing the game itself - I'm looking forward to making an I Am Legend-esque track if possible. I think it's safe to say this is going to be the best RR game ever made, and of course, the spiritual successor to Flatout 2. Not long to wait now :).

What I need to say? It's surprisingly good, it's an arcade racing game of the year nomination for me (hope DiRT Showdown and Gas Guzzlers do well too). Especially if you can completely forget its Ridge Racer title.

Sadly, the PC version needs to wait for the next patch to able to properly use the track editor (basic track editor will always result in CTD). Groar.

Yes, but sadly, the PC version is basically a 'terrible console port'. No custom control (for both keyboard & gamepad. Only Xbox360 gamepad works, using other than it will make insta-CTD), rather unoptimized (FPS drops all over the place, although FPS limit is now 60 instead of 30 as in the console version), and almost no graphics config other than resolution, aspect scale, and anisotropic filtering settings.

Unless if you can deal with those issues (like me), you'd better wait for the upcoming fix/patch.

Eh? The performance goes from awful to terrible in middle to subpar spec comp. Strange since this game has subpar graphics compared to this recent 3 years' arcade racers (NFS The Run, DSF, Split/Second, NFS Hot Pursuit, etc)

My comp can barely run it in 1024x768 above, need to be played in 800x600 or below to get smooth FPS (I'm not kidding BTW, either the game doesn't like my comp, or my comp sucks hard, but it still able to run NFS:Hot Pursuit and Split/Second on medium details quite smoothly).

Indeed.
I like making very Hollywood-ish scenarios on my tracks. Example: tanker truck with cars crashed into it, or a sand pile jump with conveniently placed cardboard boxes in front of it.:D
Wanna accept that Sentra sedan?

The AI is a bitch and so is the physics engine sometimes-tough shit, deal with it, it's standard Bugbear fare..

Back when that trailer came out, this game's concept was very different. It was going to be like Burnout Revenge, with emphasis on crashing into traffic, besides the environmental destruction. It was also going to be free roam.
Know what would be a great mod? Make it so there's traffic on the city streets...Bugbear said it's not possible due to "technical, design and time constraints"....Bullshit. It's possible.

They're special class cars, although basically modified normal cars (think of Tuned/Extra class in classic RR series).
My notebook hardly runs it smoothly, but my PC (with quite similar specs, plus 4GB RAM and 1GB VGA RAM) runs it with zero problem at all. Must be memory issues (my laptop's VGA only have 512 MB memory)

*INCOMING OPINION*

To me being one of the most underrated games I've played, Ridge Racer: Unbounded truly feels like a unique game. Got it a 2 months after release, and have yet to beat it. If anything, this is the true Burnout successor.

What RR:U did wrong:

- The Soundtrack: While it is okay, I never really was a big fan of dubstep, and it was annoying to hear a Skrillex song making my ears bleed while I go flying through a building, or when I'm battering another car to death. It does include songs from previous RR games, but to me, they are worse than the licensed songs.

- Lack of City Traffic: While they are still present on highways, I don't see why city tiles fail to have traffic, even if it would only in the track editor. It's sad to fly down an empty road without a 2-ton family sedan to run off the road, which kills the thrill of hurtling through the streets of town.

- Lack of Interesting Modes: When it comes to RR:U, the only choices you have are a Race, a Shindo Race, Shindo Drift, or a Frag Attack, all of which wear down after awhile and get very dull. Something like a mode where you have to do as much damage to a track under a time limit as possible would've been interesting.

- Lag Spikes: You think the game would've been very well optimized, but there's still room for much lag, especailly when a whole bunch of destructible props are being ripped away at once, or a bunch of cars are tearing apart.

- The Stiff Physics: To me, the physics are really stiff, and make it hard to get around corners, or try to move away from something, as cars barely turn, and they handle almost as bad as NFS 2015.

What RR:U did right:

- The Frags: Nothing has been more satisfying than watching a car tumble and crumble to pieces, as the camera gets a good look at it. The detail in crashes are amazing, as you watch engines shake around in the bay, wheel wells, exhaust pipes, and exhaust manifolds fly away, and all the exterior parts crunch into a mangled pile of metal, and fall off one by one. Although cars do seem to roll too much, I don't blame them, since after all, it is an Arcade racer.

- The Car Selection: While I do think it is a bit more Super/Sports biased, it still offeres a decent array of cars, from a Challenger that you get from the start, to a big, bulky Dodge Ram-like truck. It does lack quite a bit in the generic street cars, but it IS Ridge Racer.

- Track Editor: Always fun to play around in, the track editor lets you take tiles from different parts of tracks, and put them together to make your own, and put all sorts of things on it like clusters of prop cars to rip apart, big half-pipes and loops, or small, breakable props, that just add that extra bit of detail.

- The Car Detail: Although ever car has it's own generic things, like of course panels, and wheels, Bugbear takes it a step up, and details much of cars, from unique interiors, to the whole running gear systems, and the engines. Every car is personalized in it's own unique way in more than just the body.

Yes it does have flaws, but after you play into the game a bit it gets challenging, which most games lack nowadays, instead just letting you freehand it on Easy all the way. Ridge Racer: Unbounded is a truly unique game, and it is what Burnout Paradise should've been. A definite 9.2/10.

Now here's a review from a REAL Ridge Racer fan.

Ridge Racer Unbounded is hands down the worst RR game. Surpassing the likes of the DS games yes.

Why you may ask? Let's find out.

Cars.

RRU fails in every aspect of trying to follow suit of RR cars. None of the cars are made by RR brands (Such as Kamata or Age) but rather by a new lineup of manufactres. Such as Nakamura, Grover, and Dorean. The vehicles deform, which is again not like the RR games. They drive extremely stiffly and akwardly. Not like RR at all. Which normally has a sense of speed and slide.

Music.

RRU ditches the normal peppy, fun music of RR and goes into more rock and dubstep style music. Which again, is not the way it should be.

Tracks.

Shatter Bay is a lousy excuse for a RR map. It seems more like a Burnout map than anything. Some of it even reminds me of Motor City or Sunshine Keys. It's also destructible. Again, not in uniform. (sense a pattern?)

Events.

Worst part of the game is the repetitive events. You are bored of them before you even do the first 7 from the first section of the map. The events are long, the rivals have terrible rubberbanding, And nothing about them feels like Ridge Racer.

Track Editor.

The track editor feels like something from Build N Race or Modnation Racers. It's probably the best part of the game, But the track pieces are not well sized and they are easy to mess up on while driving.

Overall this game feels like the scrapped Split/Second 2. I strongly believe this game was started from the remains of the canceled game. The driving, destruction, graphics, and cars all feel like a weird copy of S/S. The game gets a 2/10 from me. I absolutely do not recommend this game and personally will never play it again. It is just not done correctly. It needed a lot of fixing in a lot of areas. If you want a Ridge Racer game, stick to Type 4 or 7. If you want an action game with desctruction, Stick to Burnout or Split/Second.

This has been, a Burn Rubber Rant. i could have done more, But I don't want to get too offensive.

From someone who has played RR7 and RRU:

It is the best RR game ever.

Why, you may ask?

Cars.

The game ditches the repetitive brands (Kamata, AGE, Danver, ETC...) for new brands. One strange thing about Hotfoot and Grimnir is that they have the same logo.

Events.

Burn Rubber is just plain wrong. They are not boring.

Music

They ditch the music from RR7 which was too repetitive and included one of my favorite songs: Ever Never - Persecution.

Tracks

Shatter Bay is not even from Burnout.

Track Editor

You have millions of tracks.

Overall this game deserves to be played. 10/10 from me. I absolutely recommend this if you like destruction.

My review of RRU:

Cars:

Ridge Racer had original-designed vehicles but in RRU, they were more like altered real-life vehicles. Some vehicles were likable, though, such as the Wolfseye GT. The car physics were not the best, as you had to drift early in order to pull it off.

Music:

Some music were badass, but some were just crappy dubstep. DUBSTEP IS NOT MUSIC!

Tracks:

I kinda liked the dark setting, but there was a lack of traffic vehicles on most tracks.

Events:

Some events are impossible to achieve 1st place. The "stunt" time attack events were only possible with Cheat Engine's slow motion Speedhack.

Track Editor:

Quite a nice feature. Very TrackMania-like.

The verdict:

Bugbear is good for the FO series, but not as good for RR. 7/10. I recommend it if you like destruction and hard racing games.

I think Namco clearly didn't care about the series anymore at that point. They wanted to reboot it and make it a Burnout-like game, so they hired Bugbear to do it, with their experience on the Flatout series. I think the game got canceled and totally started over at one point, when they decided to add the whole "Crash through buildings" thing.

To me, the track editor is at the same time the best and the worst feature in the game. It's the best feature because of the advanced editor, which lets you put as many props as you want on the track, which in turn lets you create great stunt courses. It's the worst because every track in the game was made with it, so they aren't unique at all and get old very fast, to the point where the campaign is just extremely boring.

The game uses Bugbear's physics engine, which is good. It has the same Flatout feel, where you can destroy a lot of stuff but by doing so you're probably going to flip and land on your roof. The handling is pretty good, you actually can't just drift without letting off the accelerator and it feels better.

The game was supposed to be released as a free to play called Driftopia but Namco never paid the devs so it was ditched.

In the end, don't think of it as a Ridge Racer game. Because it has nothing to do with the other games in the series. And BR, I still think the terrible RR on the Vita with 5 cars and 3 tracks is worse. Just because it's one of the worst scams ever made.

1. Events are the worst I have ever seen in repitition and boring style. If you find these exciting then a Burnout race would give you a heart attack.
2. Never said Shatter Bay was from Burnout. Just said it was styled like one to the point it was looking like one.
3. "Millions of tracks" doesn't mean they will be tracks worth driving.
4. Why would you WANT them to ditch the old manufactures in a sudden twist with no explanation? It's a lazy move.

Calling this the best RR game eve makes me immediately not like you as a human. Even calling this a Ridge Racer game is a lie.

Some people will still say something bad is good. If you are a seasoned gamer who has played a lot of good and bad games, you'll see it for the crap that it is.

Hence why I just call it a 'Burnout successor'. It feels more like a remade Burnout if anything.

Why a Burnout Successor?

1: You get boost... To either batter someone to oblivion, or tear through someplace. Usually, the breakable buildings act in a sense like shortcuts.
2: The frag camera feels remotely similar to the crash-cam after taking someone down.
3: You earn points by destroying things to get new cars.
4: A lot of tracks in it remind me of Burnout.
5: The names remind me of something from Paradise.
6: Traffic can weightlessly be flung around, like in Burnout Revenge.
7: The physics feel stiff, fairly similar to Burnout Revenge, but Revenge STILL does it better.

If only it had been a Burnout, and maybe the game wouldn't have been hit so hard, but constant racing does get repetetive, similar to the first and second Burnout. (Of course with thongs on the side to keep you entertained.)
